Employment Swap

Friday, 29 January 1999

Today was Chris's last day at ITS, the place where she'd been working as office manager. It was also the day I took up Crossover's offer of full-time employment, extended a couple of days ago.

I'd initially been reluctant to take up full-time employment again. Last summer, when I first started doing contract work for Crossover, I'd been thinking of alternating doing work for them and doing temp jobs through Web-Staff, eventually working my way into a position where I could be earning enough to take long stretches of time off, or at least just work part of the week all the time. But I never did bother to go after an temp work once Crossover's jobs became regular, so I figure I'm better off taking the security of a job at a place that lets me work flexible hours (necessary if I'm going to keep working out in the mornings), and building myself up through that work. If the contract we're currently pursuing works out right, it should be a very pretty feather in my cap.

Yesterday, Lisa and Josh came by the office to drop off my copy of Alarums & Excursions, and we strolled over to Havana Pies for a variety of empanadas (I especially recommend the cajun jambalaya and the pecan duck) and then down to Viniero's for dessert. Lisa brought up the idea of running an Amber game, and I said that if I were going to run such a game it would be based in the Courts of Chaos and would use the Everway rules. Lisa practially begged me to run one, which I'm not really inclined to do, but I've been poking around on the net to see if anyone has already done the work of figuring out how best to represent the various Amber powers in Everway game terms. I found one guy who's doing something like this, but he isn't letting his players start with Pattern or Logrus ability and hasn't put up his rules yet. I like them better as as magic rather than as powers, but don't know which elements to tie them to.

The Sports Walkman I ordered from Shopping.com on Jan. 12th finally arrived today. The books and CDs I ordered from Amazon.com Sunday night arrived yesterday. I know who I'd rather do business with, but Amazon doesn't do consumer electronics.
