Links

OK, The Links page is back, though not in anything like its former glory. If this isn't enough for you, check out my Bookmarks page, with over 600 links. And the Web Log, updated (more or less) daily.

Things I Enjoy Reading

Salon
Some of the smartest writing on the web can be found here. (Also some of the stupidest, like Camille Paglia's column.)
Slashdot
A weblog for computer nerds.
The Onion
Parody newspaper. Simply the funniest thing on the Net. Updated on Wednesdays.
Jon Carroll
A really good columnist, published daily.

People

Forget about all those glitzy corporate web pages and the "way new journalism";the Web is about people. Here are some interesting ones. Some I know personally, others I know only from what I've read about them. Also, see my Role-Playing Games page for the e-mail addresses and web pages of contributors to Alarums & Excursions.

Raphael Carter
Raphael is brilliant and amazing. Make sure to check out the Sonnets on Science.
C.J. Silverio
My favorite part of ceej's site is her journal.
Eric Raymond's Home Page
Eric is one of those people who makes me feel like I'm just not doing enough with my life. Be sure to check out his pages on riddle-poems, the SF Glossary, and of course the Jargon File.

Net-Related Sites

Web Design Group
A good, simple, comprehensive guide for HTML authors. I find their Stylesheets Guide especially useful.
Deja.com
Deja.com (formerly DejaNews) archives Usenet articles, letting you look up what that jerk you're arguing with in alt.politics really said last month.
List of Usenet FAQs
Also arranged by Newsgroup.

Science, Philosophy, Politics

An Introduction to Atheism
It's a simple faith, but I find comfort in it. If you wish to try talking me out of it, you'd probably better read this page on Constructing a Logical Argument first. And you should probably then take a look at the Talk.Origins archive.
Electronic Frontier Foundation
The closest thing Net users have to a political lobby.
The Black Thursday Machine
See what your favorite sites might have looked like if the CDA hadn't been overturned.
Shufflebrain
How does the brain contain the mind? Essays about the holographic nature of the brain, and experiments upon salamanders and tadpoles.
President '96
Check out something I spent over a year of my life working on.
Nizkor Home Page
A site devoted to Holocaust scholarship. Look here before believing any of the assholes who claim it never happened.
Operation Clambake
This site is a good index of the many web resources dedicated to spreading the truth about the "Church" of Scientology.

SF, Comics, RPGs

The Grand Comic-Book Database Project
This is an ambitious project: An all-volunteer attempt to assemble a database indexing story, creator, and other information about every comic ever published.
The Net Book of Plots
Plot ideas for RPGs, sorted by length (from one-liners to things longer than a page), genre (fantasy is by far the best represented, but there's also a substantial "any" section), type (affliction, exploration, magic, quests, and a section for plots that can start off a campaign), and setting.
The Net Book of Plots

New Comic Book Releases List
The comics that are expected to ship each week, updated every Tuesday.
Comics Worth Reading
Johanna Draper Carlson reviews comic books.

Finding Stuff on the Web

All the Web
Currently, my favorite search engine.
Yahoo!
Has anyone reading this not heard of Yahoo!? I suppose it's possible. Well, you've heard of it now. It's only mediocre on searches, but it works pretty well as what it's intended to be -- a subject-based index.
Open Directory Project
A Yahoo-like directory. Better in some areas.

General Reference

Internet Movie Database
A searchable database of information on movies. Titles, directors, cast, writers, etc. If you're in the United States, use the US server.
Gospel Communication Network's Bible Gateway
Search the Bible for keywords or phrases, or browse by chapter and/or verse. Multiple translations.

Macintosh Sites

MacInTouch
This page is updated daily with the latest news about new products, software upgrades, and bug reports for Mac software and hardware.
Scripting News
Lots of news about Frontier, Macs, the Web, Java, and (especially recently) XML. Well, a bit less about Macs now that Dave Winer's ported Frontier over to WinTel. I check it every day.
