Days of Legend

Lyrics and music © Michael Rubin 2/4/87

Camelot, they tell me, was no castle but a fort of logs and mud.
King Arthur was a tribal war-chief with no sword in stone nor Holy Grail;
But that other Round Table lives, in our songs and minds and in our blood,
Where maids are fair and knights are bold and Merlin's spells will never fail
And the monster's lair with hoards of gold and magic rings is rightful prey
For the heroes who live in the land of long ago and far away.

Give me wizards and dragons' flame,
Days of legend that never were;
For history's but one muse in nine
If you see only facts, you're nearly blind.

We call them the Dark Ages, superstitious times when men still feared the night.
But Earth still had its spirits then, in tree and stream and under every hill.
There was magic in the land, and old wives' tales were often right;
The little folk and creatures bright did good men well and bad men ill.
Technology's chased back the night, but the fair folk too have gone to stay;
They've all returned to whence they came, to long ago and far away.

Give me fairies and unicorns,
Days of legend that might have been;
For history's but one muse in nine
If you see only facts, you're nearly blind.

So buckle up your seatbelts, take the Winnebago out into the wild.
Yellowstone is full of smog from tourists come to see the wolf and bear.
Nature's packaged in a can for folks who like their excitement mild
But the rest of us are getting bored; the real thing's no longer there.
The earth is safe and all explored, and getting smaller every day
But there's still adventure in the tales of long ago in a galaxy far away.

Give me starships and Jedi swords,
Days of legend that are yet to be!
For history's but one muse in nine
If you see only facts, you're nearly blind.

Note:

Before he died, Mike spoke with Christine Quiñones about getting the tune for this song down on paper. The result of this meeting is in a musical notation file on my hard drive, but Chris says it's not finished. She'll finish it some time when she isn't working full time while carrying a 16-credit college course load.
